Daddy Long Legs and caterpillars were my bug pets of choice at age 10. The spiders, friendly and of course long legged were common in my Ohio suburb. I’d catch them and feed them liverwurst, the best thing for that disgusting meat product.
I had a pet caterpillar I named “William the Conqueror” that I trained to walk across a tight rope strung across an Easter basket. I brought it to school for Show and Tell one time, dramatically introducing William like a miniature circus master.
I have no idea what my teacher thought, but back then kids weren’t so cynical and they watched my act with interest. William didn’t fall off and my fellow students clapped politely when I bowed.
